Description

“ In fearful day, in raging night,
With strong hearts full, our souls ignite,
When all seems lost in the War of Light,
Look to the stars-- For hope burns bright!”

As if I haven't made enough DC fancharacters already.

So, uh, I noticed something. There are many different Lantern Corps, but we know the Green Lanterns best, don't we? And DC is an American comics company. So it would make sense that the creators tend to just make most of the Green Lanterns that get chosen Americans. Okay, fine. But why are all four Green Lanterns of Earth in the canon male Americans, and of the four, why are three of them white guys? Can we not get a little gender and racial diversity in there, let alone any nationality diversity?

And it was as this thought was occurring to me a while back that I decided I wanted to make a Lantern Corps character who was female, and NOT American by birth. And thanks to *itaZuran, I've been feeling like I don't really have many Gen 1.5 Batman/DC OCs, so I wanted to make her part of Gen 1.5 (younger than most 1stGen characters, but old enough she could easily babysit 2ndGens when they start coming around.)

And it was really only last night that this girl started to come together in my mind. Her name is Nuriyah (last name of Basir.) She's Arabian, but I decided for the sake of things (since I AM an American,) shortly after she receives the blue ring, her parents send her to live with her aunt and uncle in America. (I imagine they're scared, not of her or of her status as a new Blue Lantern, but because of what could happen to her as a result.) Nuriyah is slowly growing accustomed to life in the USA, and she can speak pretty decent English, though the language barrier means she doesn't often understand a lot of American idioms. She's fourteen, and just getting used to her newer freedoms in America, and learning and training under the tutelage of John Stewart, the Green Lantern.

Now I'm not sure how many of you know a lot about the differing Lantern Corps, but there are many different rings in the color spectrum. Green rings draw on willpower, red rings on rage, yellow rings on fear, violet on love, orange on greed, indigo on compassion, and blue rings draw on hope.
HOWEVER. There is a catch to the blue rings. They can only work properly when in close proximity to a Green Lantern's ring! Because hope is nothing without the willpower to act upon it. Talk about your cool concepts for these rings! Blue rings by themselves are purely defensive, but when close to a green ring, they possess all the normal abilities of a green ring...and one other awesome power besides: Blue rings can heal wounds and restore lost limbs and body parts! But even so, there's ANOTHER catch! Blue rings supercharge green rings. This isn't so bad, unless the hope from the blue ring is so strong it overpowers the green ring and causes it to implode, taking the hand of the Green Lantern with it. What a double-edged sword, huh?
And the more I thought about that, the more I decided that Nuriyah would definitely have to be fourteen and training under a Green Lantern who would teach her to use her ring wisely. And who better than John Stewart? Especially since, according to canon in the comics and other 'verses, John is the ONLY Green Lantern whose willpower exceeds the limits of his ring. (I knew I liked that guy.)

A lot of Nuriyah's backstory/history, current bio, and personality are still in development, but I hope you like her nonetheless! ^^~

Oh my God, it is SO RAD to see this and be able to get some perspective on her development (and yours)? Like this is before you decided to make Jinan a lesbian, and before you nerfed Nuriyah's English.

'according to canon in the comics and other 'verses, John is the ONLY Green Lantern whose willpower exceeds the limits of his ring.' ...Wait what o.o;
